How to grow marjoram. Cultivation and care.

There are two types of majoran: wild marjoram and sweet marjoram. This is a perennial herb which is usually grown as an annual plant. The leaves are used to flavor meat and fish dishes. Some chefs do not think wild marjoram as useful as sweet marjoram in kitchen.

Growing sweet and wild marjoram

Sweet marjoram grows well in any fertile, loamy garden soil with good drainage. Wild marjoram is known to smell like thyme but can grow well even in poor soil. Wild marjoram can be easily grown from seeds or root division. Marjoram can grow in a wide pH range. Marjoram cultivated outdoors prefers full sun. Marjoram can grow indoors well under fluorescent lamps.

Planting marjoram

It can be planted outdoors or in containers indoors. Marjoram reaches a height of 23 to 35 inches. Marjoram plants should be spaced 14 to 17 inches apart. Sow seeds indoors five weeks before last frost in your area. You can sow seeds directly to the ground in fall or winter. It also propagates well through cuttings and rootball division. Seeds will germinate in 7 to 15 days.

Care for marjoram

Water it regularly, do not overwater it.
