How to grow and cultivate potatoes. Varieties and care.

There are a very good reasons why potatoes are one of the most popular vegetables in the garden. They're easy to grow, they store well for months and they taste good. Growing your own potatoes is the best way to be sure they will not be exposed to excessive chemicals. Besides, they are fun to cultivate and just a small area can reward you with a nice crop of this tasty vegetable. This crop you can store over winter.

Potato varieties

Oval baking potatoes or red potatoes are dominating in the market, but there are actually about 1,000 different varieties of potatoes which are available for growing. The shape of potatoes, as well as the flavor, is very different from variety to variety.

Growing potatoes

Potatoes like full sun to grow. They prefer light, loose, well-drained soil with moisture. Potatoes like a slightly acid soil. Potatoes are very adaptable and can usually produce a good crop, even when the soil is less than perfect. They do not like a particularly rich soil. If you add some organic fertilizer and the pH is good, the potatoes will be just fine.

Planting potatoes

Buy certified seed potatoes. Seed potatoes are not really seeds at all. They are full-size potatoes that can start producing shoots. This happens, for example, when you store potatoes in the kitchen for a long time. Adding compost or peat can help. Gardeners can plant potatoes in mid to late spring in cold areas. In warm areas best planting is in late summer or late winter, so the plants will not grow during the hot months. Potatoes can also be planted in spring wnen the ground gets warm. The soil must be evenly moist. Potatos can tolerate light frosts. Use a sharp knife to slice the larger seed potatoes into "seeds". Each seed should be approximately 2 inches square, and should contain at least 1 or 2 "eyes" or buds. Small potatos can be planted whole. So seed potatoes can be planted whole or cut into pieces. Select a sunny sunny place with dood drainage and loose soil, so that the roots can develop well. Potatoes can be grown in different ways. If you have a lot of space potatoes can be planted one foot apart in rows of two to three feet apart. Then cover them with about an inch of soil.

Care of potatoes

Water potatoes thoroughly once a week during warm summer weather. Do not forget to add some additional soil when the plants develop. Always be sure that the surface tubers are covered with soil.

You can harvest them when the vines turn yellow in the end of summer.

Storage of potatoes

Store them in dark cool place where temperatures are about 40 degrees.
