It is rich in vitamin C, minerals, pectin and so on. With good care from one hive you can collect 4.9 kg of berries. Currant reproduces well with green cuttings and adapts well to different soil and climatic conditions.
Varieties of currant. Black curant, red currant, pink and white currant
The correct choice of the variety is the guarantee a high yield. But this, of course, does not mean that caring for the plantings is less important than the variety. Requirements for variety can be very different. Sometimes varieties can be with low yields, but with very good taste and suitable for specific conditions. For the gardener it is not a significant disadvantage, for example, nonsimultaneous ripening of berries. Conversely, collecting them as they mature, you can enjoy the harvest gradually. It is important to take into account such a quality as winter hardiness, especially if the garden is located in adverse conditions. There are different types of currant: black currant, red currant, white currant.
Growing red and black currant
Black and red currant need constant renewal to ensure good yields. Every year remove about one third of the oldest stems. Choose sunny locations that have good air movement to reduce disease problems.
Planting white, black, red currants
Sunny and protected from the wind places are better for black currant. Red currant, and especially white currant, requires more open space. Currants can be planted in spring and autumn, but the best season is autumn (the first half of October). Planting density depends on variety. Usually it is planted at a distance of 1.2m. If the soil is poor, add decomposed manure or compost and a complex of mineral fertilizers. Then mulch it with decomposed manure or compost. It requires regular watering after planting. Red currant is planted the same way as black and white.
Care of red, black, white currant
In order to get stable and high yields it is necessary to add organic and mineral fertilizers every year. A few buckets of compost is enough. Sometimes it is necessary to loosen the soil around the plant. Regular watering is necessary during hot weather.
