Grape vine varieties
In the world there are about 5000 varieties of grapes, not counting hybrids. There is a special science for it - ampelography. Table grapes are characterized by big beautiful bunch of large berries. Technical grades are characterized by small tight bunch with small berries. However, not every variety can be attributed solely to the dining or technical variety. There are many varieties suitable for fresh consumption and for processing. An important economic feature is also a time of ripening. Table varieties differ from very early to very late. And of course grape varieties are differentiated by cold hardiness.
It grows freely in areas sheltered from the wind. Varieties with black fruits require more heat than varieties with bright fruits. Although there are a few cold hardy varieties with black fruits.
Planting grape vines
Selecting a location for planting grapes is extremely important, as it should be protected from the wind. It also should be full of sun. In warm areas grapes grow well at high altitude above the sea. Slopes facing south or southwest are the best for it. In colder areas grape vines can be grown against a wall or fence, facing south. If the soil is poor, add decomposed manure or compost and a complex of mineral fertilizers. Grape vines need a support system of horizontal wires. Planting can be performed from October to March. However, these terms are applicable only to the southern areas where the soil does not freeze in winter. In other areas the best planting time is spring (before bud breaks). Plant vines at a distance of 1.2 meters. Then mulch it with decomposed manure or compost.
Fertilizing and watering grape vines
Once a month you can add complex mineral fertilizers. Every spring mulch it with decomposed compost. Vines which are grown against walls, need regular watering.
